On This Day, 80 Years Ago II
Horrific news published in the press
Along with the announcements of the occupation by the Red Army, at the end of the winter 5704 (March 1944), beginning with a series of brilliant victories on the battlefield, the horrible news about the extermination of the Jews of Europe on an unbelievable scale began to be published.
Here is one report:
“Moskow. The Red Army did not find a single Jewish soul in the cities of Volynia, Podolia, and Galicia, which they conquered in recent days. In all the cities in the 3 regions, there were robust Jewish populations before the German conquest” (Davar, March 10, 1944)
In my opinion, it is a bit strange to read the following ad in the same newspaper (Davar, March 10, 1944):
An ad for buying items instead of flowers for gifts
And also, this report:
80,000 Jews have already been deported from France
Next to 2 huge pages full of announcements about plays and banquets, gatherings, and entertainment…
Comes this modest headline:
Dutch Jews are employed in clearing the Warsaw Ghetto
The short headlines appeared alongside the regular long, political, or entertaining news…
